Air Conditioning Comparisons

May 5th, 2012

There are different types of air conditioners which vary according to size and their functionalities. Each of these systems has a specific type of setting for which it’s more suitable for.

Window air conditioner is the most commonly used especially for single rooms. The major components i.e. compressor, condenser and evaporator are all enclosed in a single box. This is then fitted ion a slot either on the wall or on the window sill. They are the best type of air conditioners for rental apartments as no alterations (such as drilling) are done on the walls. However, their major disadvantage is that they do not include any installation kits such as bolts or frames to secure the unit on the window.

Split air conditioners are comprised of two units: the indoor and outdoor units. The indoor unit comprises of the evaporator, cooling fan/coil. This unit needs no slot for it to be fixed on the wall. The outdoor unit (external condenser box) consists of compressor, evaporation valve and condenser. Unlike the widow air conditioner, it can be used to cool more than one room. They are also permanent and can be installed on various areas such as walls, ceiling or at floor level. However they have a major disadvantage in that they make a lot of noise that can be disturbing to the neighbors.

Packaged air conditioner is specially designed in such a way that it can efficiently serve more than two rooms thus convenient for large homes and offices. This type of air conditioner can be arranged in two ways. First all the major components i.e. compressor, condenser, evaporator and expansion valves can be enclosed in one box. Thus the cooled air will be thrown by the high capacity blower such that it flows via the ducts to the different rooms. The second arrangement is whereby the condenser and compressor are enclosed in one housing such the compressed gas passes through the individual units that consist of cooling coil and expansion valve which are located in the different rooms. The main advantage of this type of air conditioner is that it saves energy as a single conditioner can serve an entire home.

The central air conditioners are used for large applications such as hospitals, hotels and large buildings. The system consists of a plant room where all the large components such as compressor, condenser, evaporator and thermostatic expansion valve are kept. The condenser and compressor can be of tube or shell type. The compressor has multiple cylinders and is cooled using water (like the vehicle engine). The cooled air passed to the different rooms through the ducts. Unlike the other types of air conditioners, this system are more sophisticated although at times can be complex. But computerization has enhanced the addition of electronic utilities that improves on the simplicity of the system. The major advantage of this system is that the amount of cool air needed in a room can easily be controlled depending on the heat load inside the room.

Air Conditioning: An Essential Commodity

May 5th, 2012

An air conditioning unit today is an important part of every household, with temperatures rising every year during the summer months, it is unimaginable to contemplate life without some sort of airconditioning system in place, and has become an essential commodity.

Airconditioning is a means of controlling the interior environment of buildings through the circulation, filtration, refrigeration and dehumidification of air, and many years before the term air conditioning was used to describe a mechanical system, the Houses of Parliament in London had a comprehensive and controversial scheme for cooling, heating, and circulation of air.

The outside air was drawn into a duct, passed through filtering sheets, heated by a hot water heater or cooled over blocks, of ice, then drawn up through holes in the floor into the House of Commons, and the used air was drawn up by the heat of a ventilating fire through raised panels in a glass ceiling and discharged.

Air conditioning is part of the terminology that we use known as HVAC (heating, ventilation and airconditioning), the equipment should be able to alter air temperature and humidity, and circulate and mix air, as well as filter and purify air.

Heating which represents the ‘H’ in HVAC has always been associated with radiators, furnaces, fire places and stoves, and as most people will know radiators are fed with hot water from boilers, a fire place and a stove provide heat by burning wood or coal, and of course a furnace uses fossil fuel.

The ventilation or the ‘V’ in HVAC relates to air circulation and movement, and its purpose is for the safety and comfort of an occupant in any given space, and lastly the ‘AC’ is an abbreviation of air conditioning, and the very word ‘conditioning’ suggests that any air conditioners should condition the air for a comfort level that is perfect for a household.

Most people associate air conditioners as just a cooling system, especially consumers in the UK, for the simple reason that the British have for some years been way behind other countries around the world when it comes to the installation of air conditioning, having said that, the UK is fast catching up, and more and more businesses and homeowners are taking air conditioning very seriously.

An air conditioner is a very tough piece of equipment, it can withstand all sorts of abuse and just keeps running, this can lead to complacency about maintenance, like everything air conditioners need regular maintenance to run properly, and without this the system can loose about 5% of it’s original efficiency, on the other hand studies have shown if maintained regularly air conditioning units can maintain up to 95% of its original efficiency.

A spokesman for Climachill, Sussex’s leading air conditioning specialists said, “we offer all sorts of central air conditioning systems also portable air conditioners nationwide, and our breakdown and maintenance service is second to none, we think after sales support is so important, and on a maintenance visit we check everything, refrigerant levels, electrical connections, change filters, clean indoor evaporator, also outdoor condenser, and more importantly check the system is running correctly”.

Whether a central system or a portable unit, air conditioning is becoming an essential commodity in the homes around the UK, check out Climachill and be confident you will get the best product and after sales service.

Honey Dos and Don’ts: DIY Projects and Those Best Left to the Pros

May 3rd, 2012

Is that list of “honey-dos” a little longer than you’d like or a little more extensive than you can handle, take a tip from the experts: Some “honey-dos” are really “honey-don’ts.”

Stephen C. Townzen, owner of Thomas Construction, explained why some jobs are better left to the professionals. His explanation breaks down into three short, but very important, words: expertise, safety and warranties.

As Townzen points out, even the most accomplished do-it-yourselfer can void a warranty if the product isn’t installed precisely as the manufacturer directed. What honey wants to be the one to void a 15-, 20- or 30-year warranty on expensive siding, windows, flooring or more? Not me!

Plus, if you do-it-yourself, there’s a good chance you won’t be able to buy the high-quality products you really want to have.

“Often, higher quality products, such as thermal windows, are only available to high-end remodelers. The typical do-it-yourselfer won’t be able to buy the product because the manufacturer wants to know that the product is going to be professionally installed,” Townzen explained.

Even if a homeowner has the DIY skills to do the job, professional installation may be the best value over time.

Townzen pointed out that homebuyers often hear endorsements from real estate professionals such as, “This home features thermal windows, professionally installed by Thomas Construction.” But he doubted that they ever hear a realtor say, “This home features windows installed by homeowners, Susie and Bob.” There’s value added to the product when it’s professionally installed.

“Plus, remodeling and maintenance projects that have been professionally completed are backed by the reputation of the company doing the job,” Townzen said.

If you’ve chosen your construction company wisely that’s a very good thing.

Of course, some honey-dos seem so simple, that it’s hard not to think of them as DIY projects. But even seemingly simple projects can go wrong without the proper tools, equipment and knowledge.

Townzen offered the perfect example – power-washing. “Power-washing seems simple enough, but it if the washer is too powerful or the cleaner too strong it can damage the siding,” Townzen said. And, not all siding should be power-washed. Once again, it pays to know exactly what you should and should not be doing.”

The right equipment and expertise are never more important than when it comes to safety. You don’t want to be the one in the hospital bed saying, “I thought that ladder would have been sturdy enough,” or “Who knew that chain saw would bounce back like that.” If you don’t have the right tools or are unsure how to use them, call in a pro. And if the product you’re installing, say an awesome recreation system, is going to be used by the ones you love, it’s important that it’s done right.

Townzen offered a final thought on DIY projects.

“When it comes to kitchen and baths, it’s best to call in the professionals.” He’s got a good point. Plumbing, electric and inexperience just don’t go well together.

Are you planning to purchase swimming pool heaters? There are various advantages of the pool heaters. First of all they allow you to swim throughout the year even in the winter. It can keep the water warm up to 75 to 80 degrees. There are various types of heaters available these days. They use various sources of energy to heat the pool.

The three main categories of heaters are gas, solar and electric heaters. People usually have different levels of heating requirement. The first kind of heater is the gas heater. This is one of the most commonly used products these days. This product has greatly improved itself over the years.

One of the advantages of this kind of swimming pool heaters is that it heats the pool water very quickly. So this water heater is not used regularly. This product also helps to maintain the warmth of the water even the outside temperature varies. You can use on gas heater for at least 5 years. Other than gas these pool heaters can also use oil.

The gas used by these products is LP gas. The other advantage of this kind of water is that they are less expensive than the other methods of heating. The next most popular swimming pool heaters are the solar heaters. One of the disadvantages of this product is that they are very much expensive.

These pool heaters usually cost at least $3000 to $4000. On the other hand the operating cost of this product is much lesser. Another disadvantage of these products is that solar collector is usually as big as the surface of the pool. This can create problems for lots of houses. They might not afford that much space. Finally you have the electric heaters.

These are also quite expensive when bought but is lesser than the gas heaters in operating cost. So the decision depends on you. Lower My Electricity Bill

May 1st, 2012

Bills are shooting up faster than before. We are turning on the TV and reading newspapers and there are more frequent references to renewable energy sources and their benefits. We are being told that more needs to be done, which is does. But this is not just for the planets benefit but for ours also. How often do people sit and think ‘what can I do to lower my electricity bill?’ Investing in a renewable source is perhaps the best alternative. I also learned to build my own DIY electricity system cheaply using a guide that I will share more about with you.

There are two popular sources for home usage. These are; solar panels and wind turbines. Allowing those at home to generate energy through the sun and wind.

Solar panels require a lot of sun. So these are perfect for those lucky enough to live where there is plenty of sun. To maximise their potential place them on roofs, either of a house or garage so they can generate more energy.

Wind turbines need to be placed in a good location. This is to ensure they reach the wind and are most affective. You can place them anywhere you like, the best places are on top of roofs or at the end of a garden, where the wind will be unobstructed.

Do you live in an area which has lots of sun, or which has lots of wind? Research properly so you can find which would be best for your location. There is no point getting solar panels when you live in an area likely to get more wind.

If you are new to renewable energy then why not start with one small turbine or solar panel, see how it works and if you are happy with the results invest in more, so that you no longer have to sit and think ‘what can I do to lower my electricity bill.’ It can be an expensive option, however the potential benefits really outweigh the cost you initially put into purchasing the sources, as it is a one off cost. I have personally managed to build my own home DIY electricity system simply following a DIY guide online.

Off Grid Power – The Main Advantages of Switching to Off Grid Power

April 30th, 2012

Off grid power systems are attracting a lot of people nowadays with all the technology advances and the Internet revolutionizing the way in which information is shared and marketed across the Globe. Many more people are realizing the importance of the off grid power in a way that can reduce their dependence on their electric companies and the up-going cost of their monthly electricity bills. Moreover, there are a series of other benefits when choosing to get off the grid such as protecting the environment and you will no longer have to be affected by the frequent power-outages.

1) The wide popularity of the off-grid power systems

The people are gaining awareness about the permanent damage caused to the environment because of man’s continuous exploitation of the natural resources and their depletion. They have now come to realize that the money can be better utilized to meet their demands using off grid power systems thus being friendly to their environment. The most popular green energy sources used are the solar panels and wind turbines that can be built all by yourself even in your own backyard for a very low cost.

2) Building your own solar and wind power systems

Everyone knows that a completely equipped commercial solar panel or wind turbine can cost as much as 10000$ or even more depending on its manufacturer and its size. There are solutions to build your own solar panels and wind turbines and avoid the high costs of brand new systems and not to mention their installation costs. The components and tools that you will need should not cost you more than $200 altogether, and if you’re a bit lucky you can get some of the parts at a local garage sale. For example the most expensive parts of a solar panel are the solar cells, that can be found online for as low as one dollar a piece. It’s recommended that you buy new solar cells and not “second-hand” ones, that unless you are an expert in this field.

3) Advantages of Switching To Off-Grid Power

There are several advantages when switching to off-grid power, not only you will be able to save thousands each year on your electricity bills but with the consumption and the pollution generated by the non-renewable sources, you can do your part in saving the environment for many generations to come.

Building Your Own Chicken Coop – All the Things to Consider When Building a DIY Chicken Coop!

April 29th, 2012

Do you plan on raising your own chickens? If yes, then you’ll need to build a chicken coop. Of course there is always the choice of buying a pre-made one, but it’s much more expensive than building your own. If you use a set of professional designs, you can build a DIY chicken house with very little work.

Chicken houses can be made from almost anything – like PVC pipes, tarps, scrap lumber, 50 gallon barrels, and the list goes on. However, wood is the most commonly used material.

Before, you begin with the building process there are a few factors that you need to take into account:

Climate: your coop should be suitable to the climate of your area. In case you live in a warm climate, you will need to focus more on ventilation in order to keep your birds cool. On the other hand, if you live in a cold climate, it’s very important to use proper insulation for the walls in order to avoid humidity and keep your chickens healthy and warm.

Predator Control: If there are many predators in your area like coyotes, dogs, raccoons, skunks, hawks, or bears, you should put a fence around your coop to stop the predators from entering. To increase protection, you can also try installing some bells on your chicken house. This way every time a predator comes into contact with the fence, the bells will ring, which will scare away the animal and prevent your chickens from being eaten.

Dimensions: If you own 10 or more chickens you will need to build a large/premium hen house. For 3-4 birds you will need to construct a small/portable one, and for 5-9 chickens a mid-sized one. Every chicken requires about 3 to 4 square feet of space. Having enough space is very important for the health of your birds and it helps them produce a lot more eggs. What is more, it’s a well known fact that when chickens are housed in confined conditions, they can resort to pecking or even cannibalism.

Location: you need to choose an area where your chicken house can receive a good amount of sunlight, which will allow it to dry quickly every time it rains. South facing coops will get the highest amount of sunshine. Choosing the wrong location can cause diseases among your flock and decrease the egg production.

Building your own coop can be a very enjoyable activity for you and your family and will give you a great sense of accomplishment. Also, following the step-by-step instructions of a reliable diy manual can make the whole process very easy.

Solar Energy Versus Fossil Fuel Generator

April 28th, 2012

In the present day world, the internal combustion engines, and in turn, vehicles that use those engines are facing a crisis. This is chiefly due to the amount of fossil fuel going down, and the rapid hike in oil prices. In this scenario, it is indeed advantageous to make use of solar power. Experiments with solar power based vehicles are on, and the markets have already seen the presence of hybrid cars. According to experts, fossil fuel driven cars would be effectively replaced entirely by solar power driven vehicles, that too within the foreseeable future. The latter would also prevent the release of the polluting carbon monoxide gas. That would definitely ensure a cleaner, healthier atmosphere.

Solar power is advantageous, since the supply of raw material (i.e. sunlight) is abundant and renewable, and the solar energy stations can be set up independently as well. Other accessories of the system are also freely available. Solar power stations function noiselessly too – much to the convenience of users. These facilities, hence, make solar energy extremely popular for various purposes. The solar energy systems can be installed at all parts of the world as well. Solar power packages often come complete with battery banks, converters and control panels. Controllers are used to convert modules of power from solar panels to usage of battery. These systems, with their tough trailers, are often used by geologists, when they move in lands, hitherto unexplored, in search of oil and minerals.

Before actually setting up solar power systems, training manual needs to be consulted regarding the proper manner of installing such systems. The place to acquire batteries, the place where you can get these batteries for free, and the ideal place to set up such a system are all discussed in the manual. All possible safety related queries as well as the wiring systems need to be explained in detail. Once users have these data, they can easily set up effective solar energy systems in their homes.

Solar energy is, by nature, environmentally viable and non-polluting, and often considered to be the best among such energy sources. In particular, the eco-friendly nature of this source is expected to come to the fore in the future. The sun provides heat and light during the day; in addition, electricity can also be made available during the night, provided the solar power system is grid-tied, or has a battery-back. There are other benefits of solar power systems as well.

The cost of photovoltaic cells is also on its way down. This would help to extend the usage of solar energy to areas which were using other conventional energy sources thus far, and in newer forms too. The advantages of solar energy are also becoming evident over time. Clean, toxin-free environment can be guaranteed too, since internal combustion engines would soon be replaced by solar power systems. Thus, solar energy systems are fast emerging as the most important source of mainstream power.

Solar energy is derived from the rays of the sun, as is evident from its name itself. Solar energy has numerous benefits for users. However, until recent years, this source of energy could be used only during the day. Presently though, the current technology enables individuals to effectively store and use solar power, even during the night.

Some Safety Tips To Remember When Using Indoor Hot tubs

April 27th, 2012

In dealing and using household objects and appliances, it is common knowledge that we should always practice some amount of caution. No matter how safe you think an object can be, it is still advised to practice a bit of safety in handling them to avoid accidents. In the case of hot tubs, the same philosophy applies. Hot tubs are one of the best household appliances. They offer warm and cozy bathwater, coupled with the lure of relaxation and massages. The whole family can enjoy them and have a good time. But as shallow as the water in hot tubes are, still, safety should always be kept in mind when using them. A few useful tips in safely using your tub, coupled with a dose of common sense, you can avoid accidents from happening.

First and foremost, always remember, that when dealing with a body of water, there’s always the risk of drowning. Hot tubs aren’t as deep as pools. Usually, the water in hot tubes are a little over the knee high but then again, hot tubs have powerful suction mechanisms and pumps and drains in them. It is strongly advised that you keep your head above the water or tie your hair to avoid the possibility of getting them tangled in the drains which may cause drowning.

Be careful when walking by or exiting and entering hot tubes. Hot tubs are made of hard and smooth plastic interiors which are very slippery when wet. The water in the tubs also has a tendency to splash out of the hot tubes and into the surrounding area which may cause slippage or sliding. It is best to install non-skid surfaces around. Also install non-skid surfaces on the steps leading to the hot tubes and railings to hold on as you enter and exit hot tubs. It is also best if you place towels within reach to make it easier to dry off wet feet.

As busy and as technology wise today’s people are, please do not bring any electrical or electronic devices in the hot tubs. These include hair dryers, laptops, cord telephones, hair dryers, etc. which may fall into the tub and cause electrocution. If you wish to watch some television while soaking in the tub, make sure to place the TV at least 10 feet away from the hot tub to eliminate any possibility of it tipping over and falling into the tub or it getting splashed on with water.

When having parties, avoid drinking alcohol while inside the hot tubes. Warm water has the tendency to double or speed up the effects of alcohol. Some people may get too drunk and fall asleep and slide underwater. Also, it is best not to eat while inside the hot tubes. The food might fall into the water and contaminate destroy the water balance.

When bathing with children, always make sure that they are at all times, accompanied by an adult. Never leave the children alone in hot tubs. Strict adult supervision should always be maintained to keep the children safe. Explain to them the proper conduct in bathing in hot tubes and that horseplay should not be tolerated.
It would be best to always bathe with a friend or two around. Not only is it more fun but it is good to have someone else around if ever trouble arises.

10 reasons to raise your own chicken runs and coops

April 26th, 2012

For those who are not convinced that raising your own chicken is exciting and so fun, here are 10 reasons why you might change your mind…and a valuable resource to start building your own chicken coops!

1 – compared to other pets, chicken are the only one I know of that can produce something for you: eggs!

2 – in the age of sustainability, it’s much better (and less costly) to have your own organic food (egg and possibly super tender chicken meat)

3 – chicken will also produce very good fertilizer for your plants and other vegetables that you are growing

4 – chicken runs are good for your soils: when they look for food with thei beak, they air the soils

5 – say goodbye to the nasty insects and bugs that are killing your vegetables and flowers: your chickens are going to eat them all!

6 – chicken runs are very low maintenance pets but very high on “outputs” (they can make up to 2 to 4 eggs a day). If you have only 3 chickens, just do the math and you will see that you will never buy eggs in the supermarket again (which saves you money on the long run!)

7 – eggs are a wonderful ingredient in various cooking recipes. White eggs can be used for a very large range of fabulous desserts (pavlova, meringue, tiramisu, etc.)

8 – if you have children, they will love running after the chicken and show them to their friends! It’s an excellent way to make them socialize more!

9 – It’s also a great way to have better relationships with your neighboors! If you offer them some eggs from time to time, you can’t believe how efficient chicken can be in softening the relationships

10 – Last and not least: it’s a self sustaining system! Chicken will reproduce themselves naturally, thus growing your chicken-assets automatically without a lot of expenses. You can even resell some of them over time if you have too many!

Of course, having your own chicken coops is going to cost you a bunch of money if you decide to buy the ready-to-use kits available in the industry.
